New Delhi, June 10: Raghav Chadha, a member of the Rajya Sabha, has hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s record tenure as a historic moment for Indian democracy. He emphasized that India, the world’s largest democracy, is home to over 1.4 billion people, 22 scheduled languages, and numerous dialects, religions, castes, and communities. In such a diverse nation, the continuous mandate for a single leader three times is indeed an extraordinary achievement.
On Wednesday, Chadha took to the social media platform ‘X’ to express, “Today, history has been made. On June 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 4,399 days in office, surpassing the 4,398 days served by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. This makes him the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in our republic’s history.”
He added, “Pause for a moment and consider what this truly means. India is not an ordinary country; it is a civilization of 1.4 billion people. It encompasses 22 scheduled languages, hundreds of dialects, multiple religions, castes, communities, and countless regions and lifestyles coexisting together. We are the world’s largest democracy, with nearly 980 million voters, which is more than the entire population of Europe. This makes our electoral process perhaps the most complex in the world.”
Chadha noted, “These 1.4 billion people have repeatedly entrusted the leadership of the country to the same individual. The Indian populace has granted a mandate three times—in 2014, 2019, and now in 2024—each time setting a new precedent of trust. Winning the confidence of such a vast and diverse nation even once is a significant achievement, but doing so three times without interruption is extraordinary.”
He also compared the tenures of Jawaharlal Nehru and Narendra Modi, stating, “Consider how different these two eras are. Nehru received his mandate in the early decades of the republic, a time when one party dominated, and Congress was in a strong position against a fragmented opposition. In contrast, Modi’s mandate came in a much more challenging democracy, characterized by coalition politics, strong regional powers, and intense competition among multiple parties.”
Chadha further remarked, “PM Modi has faced these challenges head-on. He secured a full majority in 2014 and 2019 on his own, marking the first time since 1984 that a single party achieved a full majority, and then led a victorious coalition in 2024.”
The Rajya Sabha member concluded by stating that winning the trust of a highly competitive nation repeatedly is a monumental achievement by any standard. On this historic occasion, he salutes the wisdom of Indian voters and acknowledges the Prime Minister’s unwavering dedication to the country. He also wished for PM Modi’s good health and longevity.
