Patna, August 28: JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha addressed the sudden floods in Nepal and the potential risks for Bihar. He stated that the Bihar government is closely monitoring the situation, with the disaster management department on high alert.
During a media briefing in Patna, Jha mentioned that Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary have visited the affected areas to assess the situation. He explained that the Narayani River from Nepal enters Bihar as the Gandak River. Therefore, incidents like cloudbursts, heavy rainfall, or sudden surges in water flow in Nepal could impact Bihar as well.
He emphasized the need for both countries to collaborate on potential solutions to tackle such circumstances. The Bihar government is fully prepared to handle disasters, with the disaster management department continuously monitoring the situation.
Regarding the floods in Nepal, Jha described the images and videos of the tragedy and its affected people as deeply saddening. He noted that disasters can strike anywhere, and during these challenging times, India stands with its neighbor, Nepal.
He mentioned that Prime Minister Modi has assured Nepal’s Prime Minister of all possible assistance. Jha highlighted the long-standing close ties between India and Nepal, noting the strong social and cultural connections. Whenever a disaster occurs in any country or region, India steps forward to help to the best of its ability. India had also supported Nepal during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sanjay Jha raised concerns about the ongoing sediment accumulation in rivers, which contributes to the flooding issue in Bihar. He pointed out that tributaries like the Gandak merge into the Ganges, and continuous sediment buildup could affect water flow.
He also referenced the Farakka Barrage and related agreements, stating that this has been a significant issue for Bihar for a long time. The Bihar government spends thousands of crores annually on flood management and relief efforts.
