Bhubaneswar, August 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar announced on Thursday that Odisha is likely to experience widespread rainfall over the next five to seven days due to an active monsoon system and a developing low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.
IMD Director Manorama Mohanty stated that an upper air cyclonic circulation is currently extending from the lower to mid-tropospheric levels. This system is expected to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area in the northwestern Bay of Bengal around August 28-29, resulting in significant rainfall across the state.
In her forecast for the next 24 hours, Mohanty indicated that light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected in several locations, with isolated heavy rainfall possible in some districts. The IMD has issued an orange alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts during the next 24 hours. Mohanty further noted that rainfall intensity is likely to increase in various parts of Odisha starting August 29, with heavy to very heavy rain expected in some areas.
Particularly, good rainfall is anticipated in the northern districts of Odisha. The weather system is expected to remain active into the first few days of September, bringing widespread rainfall to many parts of the state, with some locations experiencing heavy to very heavy downpours.
The IMD has advised the public to remain alert regarding weather warnings, especially in areas where heavy rainfall is expected, and to follow the guidance issued by local authorities. According to the latest forecast, rainfall will continue in Odisha over the coming days, with heavy rain warnings issued for several districts.
