Over 2.3 Million Citizens Participate in Gujarats 2027 Census Self-Enumeration Campaign

Gandhinagar, May 28: Officials reported that over 2.3 million citizens, including Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, ministers, senior officials, and residents, have participated in the ongoing self-enumeration campaign for the 2027 census across Gujarat.

The self-enumeration campaign, which began on May 17 and will run until May 31, allows residents to submit their census details online before the formal counting process starts next year.

According to the Census Operations Directorate in Gujarat, Ahmedabad recorded the highest registrations with over 42,000, followed by Surat with 22,000, and Vadodara and Anand with 16,000 each. Rajkot and Mehsana saw over 14,000 and 11,000 participants, respectively.

Census Director Sujal Maitra stated that the campaign has received a robust response from citizens across the state, urging for widespread participation before the deadline.

“If more citizens across the state utilize technology to fill out the self-enumeration forms from home and provide accurate information, it will reduce the workload on census staff and speed up the process,” he said.

Maitra also mentioned that in the next two days, a significant number of government employees will participate. All employees from the health and education departments will fill out the self-enumeration forms on May 29, while police department staff will do so on May 30.

“For the first time, the 2027 census will include a self-enumeration system, allowing citizens to submit details via an online portal and mobile phones. Access to the forms will be available only through a designated QR code,” he added.

Citizens can submit their information through the official portal. Once completed, respondents will receive a self-enumeration ID, which they must share with the census officer during the official visit.

The data will be verified before being added to the central database. Officials noted that the use of a digital system and mobile application available in 16 languages, including Gujarati, will expedite data collection and reduce the burden of fieldwork. Data collection will also be possible offline via Android and iOS applications.

The census will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, Housing Listing and Housing Census (HLO), will take place from June 1 to June 30 in Gujarat.

During this phase, officials will collect information on housing conditions, household details, drinking water sources, toilet facilities, and other properties through 33 questions.
