Patna, June 10: A tragic incident occurred in Darbhanga district of Bihar on Wednesday morning when a boat carrying farmers capsized in the Kosi River, leaving three women missing. The group was en route to harvest mung bean crops from their fields. Officials reported that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has launched an extensive search operation for the missing women.
According to authorities, the accident took place near the Ring Bund close to Tarwara Ghat in the Jamalpur police station area. Approximately ten farmers, mostly women, were crossing the river in a single boat when strong currents disrupted its balance, causing it to overturn.
Eyewitnesses noted that the river’s flow was particularly swift. Water began to fill the boat rapidly, and within moments, it capsized. Panic ensued among the passengers as they struggled to save themselves.
Ravindra Kumar, an SDRF officer present at the scene, managed to rescue seven individuals and bring them safely to the riverbank. However, three farmers, including a teenager, were swept away by the strong current and have yet to be located.
Following the incident, the rescued individuals informed local authorities. Upon receiving the news, a large number of villagers gathered at the riverbank, prompting the administration to initiate relief and rescue operations.
Upon notification, Shashank Raj, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Biroul, and SDPO Prabhakar Tiwari arrived at the scene to oversee the rescue efforts. Officials stated that the SDRF team is actively conducting searches for the missing women.
SDO Shashank Raj commented, “After receiving information about the incident, the SDRF team is searching for the missing individuals. We are gathering complete details of the case and will take necessary actions moving forward.”
This incident has once again raised concerns regarding the safety of river transport in flood-affected areas of Bihar. Just a day earlier, another boat carrying around 20 farmers capsized in the Kosi River in Saharsa district; fortunately, all passengers were rescued by local villagers.
