
Gandhinagar, May 27: Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel convened a high-level meeting in Gandhinagar on Wednesday to discuss the recent deaths of cubs in the Gir region. During the meeting, Principal Secretary of the Forest and Environment Department, Dr. Vinod Rao, provided detailed information regarding the situation.
Dr. Rao reported that four cubs had died in various areas of Gir. Approximately 17 lions in the region are currently isolated and under close observation. Intensive monitoring is being conducted within a 10-kilometer radius of the Gir Gadhda and Babaria areas, and no other signs of illness have been detected among the lions.
The Forest Department is also conducting thorough inspections of all lions in the revenue areas of Amreli and Bhavnagar districts, with daily reports being generated.
The Chief Minister was informed that as a preventive measure against seasonal diseases typically seen at the start of summer, over 350 lions in the Gir region are undergoing a de-ticking process along with other health-related initiatives.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Jaypal Singh, mentioned that veterinary specialists from Junagadh Veterinary College are also involved in this effort. The meeting was attended by the Chief Minister’s Principal Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Additional Principal Secretary Dr. Vikrant Pandey, and Secretary Dr. Ajay Kumar.
