Pune, June 10: A significant controversy has emerged in Pune, Maharashtra, following a major action by the municipal corporation against illegal constructions. The corporation used bulldozers to demolish 11 structures in the Kudalwadi area, including several temples and mosques. This action has sparked outrage among local residents and representatives of the Muslim community, who are questioning the administration’s decision.
A local resident expressed frustration, stating they have faced harassment for years. They alleged that the local market was demolished first, followed by the mosque. They claimed to have received a stay order from the court, but the demolition occurred before it could be enforced. The resident emphasized the ongoing pressure and harassment, while also expressing hope for justice from the authorities.
Social activist Rajan Nair accused the administration of deliberately targeting a specific community. He stated that while the constructions were labeled illegal, the reasons behind this classification were not clearly communicated.
Imam Irshad Yunus Ansari, who has been associated with the mosque for the past 26 years, noted that a large number of community members used to pray there five times a day. He asserted that a mosque is not just a place of worship but also a symbol of humanity and brotherhood. He condemned the demolition as entirely unjustified.
A cleric mentioned that the building demolished had been in existence for 30 to 35 years, during which prayers were regularly held. He pointed out that taxes for the structure had been consistently paid. He urged the government to provide a clear and solid justification for the demolition. Additionally, he alleged that for the past year, external individuals have been harassed and pressured to leave the area.
