Udaipur, July 27, 2026 (Daily Kiran): Hindustan Zinc Limited, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer and among the top 10 global silver producers, has planted more than 8.55 lakh saplings between 2020 and the first quarter of FY2026-27, reaffirming its commitment to biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration and climate action.
The company said the plantation drive forms part of its long-term strategy to strengthen environmental sustainability through scientific afforestation, habitat restoration and biodiversity management across its operational areas in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
During FY2025-26 alone, Hindustan Zinc planted more than 1,13,500 saplings. The initiative supports the company’s long-term objective of preventing biodiversity loss by 2030 while enhancing the quality and resilience of natural resources, vegetation and ecosystems.
Commenting on the initiative, Hindustan Zinc CEO Arun Misra said responsible mining goes beyond efficient operations and also involves protecting nature and creating a healthier environment for future generations. He said the company’s conservation initiatives reflect its commitment to maintaining a balance between industrial growth and environmental responsibility through scientific approaches, innovation and partnerships.
Hindustan Zinc has launched several location-specific environmental initiatives across its operational sites. At the Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter in Rajasthan, the company has restored 22.25 hectares of the Jarofix yard using mycorrhiza technology and has set a target of developing a natural forest across 250 hectares.
Under the Green Zawar initiative, the Zawar Mines Group carried out an extensive plantation campaign in Rawa village, encouraging community participation while strengthening local biodiversity.
The company has also adopted the Miyawaki afforestation technique at Rajpura Dariba, Chanderiya, Debari and Kayad to develop dense native forests that support biodiversity and improve carbon sequestration.
At Rampura Agucha Mines, Hindustan Zinc has established a dedicated nursery for conserving native plant species and producing saplings for future plantation programmes.
To further strengthen biodiversity conservation, Hindustan Zinc has developed and updated its Biodiversity Management Plan in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The company aims to achieve No Net Loss of Biodiversity, ensuring that development activities do not result in an overall decline in biodiversity.
According to the company, these initiatives are part of a broader strategy that combines operational expansion with environmental restoration. The approach includes rehabilitating degraded land, expanding native vegetation, enhancing ecosystem services and promoting nature-based solutions.
A Vedanta Group company, Hindustan Zinc is the first Indian metals and mining company to become a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals. The company said it continues to promote a nature-positive approach across its operations, supply chain and management systems in line with the ICMM Nature Position Statement to create long-term value for both people and the environment.
