Udaipur, Aug 11 – The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to integrate vocational and practical skills into mainstream school and higher education to bridge the longstanding gap between academic learning and skill development. The policy also calls for introducing vocational education at the middle and secondary school levels.

Responding to a question by Udaipur MP Dr. Manna Lal Rawat in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Majumdar said that the government is taking significant steps to implement NEP 2020, with a strong focus on mainstreaming skill development.

Dr. Rawat had sought details on the implementation of NEP 2020, the skill development courses offered under it, measures taken for its execution, and the status of introducing mother tongue as a medium of instruction in primary education.

Dr. Majumdar informed that, under the centrally sponsored Samagra Shiksha scheme, financial assistance is being provided to states and Union Territories for offering skill-based courses to students from classes 9 to 12, aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).

He added that several transformative changes have taken place in both school and higher education since the policy’s announcement. To create awareness and deliberate on innovative ideas for NEP implementation, a series of workshops and consultative review meetings have been organised with states, UTs, educational institutions, and other stakeholders.

Highlighting NEP 2020’s emphasis on multilingualism, Dr. Majumdar said the policy encourages the preservation and promotion of Indian languages, recommending the use of mother tongue or local language as the medium of instruction at least up to Class 5, and preferably till Class 8.

He further informed that in the Union Budget 2025–26, the government announced the Indian Language Book Project for translating textbooks and study material for school and higher education into 22 Indian languages in digital format.
