Bhopal – Madhya Pradesh is witnessing an aggressive spell of monsoon this year, with rainfall surpassing seasonal averages and triggering widespread alerts. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the state has already recorded 136.2 mm of rainfall between June 1 and June 26 — around 38% more than the expected 99 mm. With more downpours on the horizon, the situation in many districts is being closely monitored due to waterlogging and weather-related disruptions.
IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorm Alerts
The IMD has issued heavy rainfall warnings and lightning alerts across more than 30 districts of Madhya Pradesh, with orange alerts in place for several regions. Continuous showers and dense cloud cover have already affected day-to-day life in cities like Bhopal, where intermittent drizzle has persisted since early morning.
Districts Under Watch
The following districts have been identified by the IMD as high-risk zones for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms:
Immediate Alerts (June 28):
Jhabua, Alirajpur, Bhind, Morena
Orange Alerts (Heavy Rainfall + Thunderstorms):
Rajgarh, Vidisha, Raisen, Sagar, Damoh, Seoni, Umaria, Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat
Major Cities on Alert:
Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, Gwalior
The situation is further intensified due to a cyclonic circulation forming over northeast India, which is influencing rainfall patterns across central and southern Madhya Pradesh. A trough line extending across the state is adding to the intensity and spread of rainfall activity.
Rainfall Likely to Continue for the Next Five Days
Meteorologists forecast that heavy rains will continue for the next five days, with the potential for thunderstorms and lightning strikes. Public safety advisories have been issued urging residents to stay indoors during extreme weather and avoid flood-prone zones.
Waterlogging, disruption in transport services, and temporary power outages have already been reported in isolated pockets. Authorities are on high alert and are preparing disaster response teams in vulnerable regions.
Monsoon Progress So Far
The monsoon made its entry into India via Kerala on May 24, progressing quickly through Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and northeastern states like Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland. It reached Madhya Pradesh on June 16, becoming fully active across the state by June 20.
Now, with the entire state under the monsoon’s influence, rainfall is expected to remain steady — posing both relief for agriculture and challenges for urban infrastructure.
