Italys Foreign Minister Cancels US Trip Following Trumps Comments on PM Meloni

Rome, June 20: The comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have strained relations between the two nations. Following this incident, Italy’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his planned trip to a business forum in Miami, scheduled for June 21 and 22.

Tajani expressed his discontent on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “President Trump’s serious and disrespectful words against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are an insult to all of Italy. Therefore, I have decided to cancel my trip to the United States.”

According to reports from the Adnkronos news agency, Giovanni Battista Fajolari, Undersecretary of the Prime Minister’s Office in Italy, remarked, “Trump’s comments about Giorgia Meloni are part of a series of attacks and insults directed at European leaders. It is unclear whether this is intentional or a result of his failures, but he is damaging the longstanding relationship between America and Europe.”

He further noted, “Through his inappropriate remarks, he has tarnished America’s image across Europe. This damage affects not just Europe, but primarily the United States.”

Luigi Marattin, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, took to social media to assert, “When a leader of a country, who represents a nation symbolizing respect, freedom, and democracy, insults our Prime Minister, politics must respond unitedly. This is not a matter of right, left, or center politics; it is about national dignity. Right or wrong, this is my country. Our party stands with Giorgia Meloni.”

Reports indicate that Trump made his comments during a phone interview with David Parenzo on the Italian TV channel La7, where he mentioned that Meloni had expressed a strong desire to take a photo with him.

Trump stated, “She asked me for a photo. She wanted a picture with me. Perhaps I wouldn’t have done it, but I felt a bit of sympathy for her.”

He added, “Maybe she is happy that I spoke to her. For me, it wasn’t necessary to have that conversation.”

Trump also commented, “Europe has made mistakes regarding energy and immigration. If they do not resolve these issues, Europe will never be the same again.”
