Washington, June 20: President Donald Trump of the United States has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a great leader and a very strong individual. In an interview with Axios, Trump included Modi among the world leaders he admires the most. During the discussion, the U.S. President addressed issues of strength, diplomacy, and global leadership.
Throughout the interview, Trump repeatedly commended PM Modi. He highlighted qualities that he believes exemplify effective leadership. Trump pointed to Modi’s long tenure, political strength, and his international reputation.
While discussing the leaders he met at the recent G7 summit, Trump recalled Modi’s presence among the invited global leaders. He stated, “The Prime Minister of India is a great man.”
When asked how he defines a great leader, Trump cited Modi as an example of political stability in a country that has seen frequent leadership changes in the past. He remarked, “What I have seen about India throughout my life is that the leadership changes rapidly. Someone would stay for six months or a year, and then Narendra Modi becomes Prime Minister. He has been in power for over 12 years and is very strong.”
Trump noted that Modi embodies political firmness alongside peace. He said, “He acts as if everything is very calm, but he is not a calm person. He is a very strong individual. I know him quite well.”
Later, when asked which leaders stand out for their strength and leadership capabilities, Trump included Modi among the global leaders he respects the most. He remarked, “I think PM Modi is very good. He is an excellent leader. There are 1.5 billion people there. India is truly the largest.”
Trump mentioned India’s recent economic performance, attributing credit to Modi’s perspective on international affairs. He stated, “He has announced some very good numbers (from an economic standpoint). He stays away from war, which is smart.”
The U.S. President affirmed, “I know that the real PM Modi is very tough.”
During the conversation, Trump also praised Chinese President Xi Jinping, calling him great. He cited both Xi and Modi as examples of influential leaders who are respected in their respective countries.
The interview covered various topics, including the G7 summit, China, Iran, artificial intelligence, and U.S. foreign policy. Throughout the discussion, Trump emphasized that leaders who reach the highest positions possess unique abilities and courage. He said, “They are all smart. You cannot reach that level without being smart. To stay at that level, you have to be smart and tough.”
Since May 2014, PM Modi has served as India’s Prime Minister, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in a major democracy. Under his leadership, India has emerged as the most populous country and one of the fastest-growing major economies, enhancing its diplomatic and strategic partnerships across various regions.
During Trump’s first term, he established a close diplomatic and working relationship with PM Modi. This bond was notably highlighted by large public events in both countries, including the “Howdy, Modi” rally in Houston and the “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad. Since then, India and the U.S. have continuously strengthened their cooperation on strategic fronts, including defense, advanced technology, bilateral trade, energy, and security in the Indo-Pacific region.
