Dehradun, June 29  — Torrential rainfall over the past three days has led to a critical rise in river water levels across Uttarakhand, especially in the Garhwal region. The Alaknanda River is surging near Srinagar, prompting authorities to prepare for a controlled release of 2,500 to 3,000 cusecs (cumecs) of water from the GVK Srinagar Dam.

In response to the situation, Pauri District Magistrate has issued a high alert for downstream regions such as Kirtinagar, Devprayag, Tapovan, and Munikireti, urging residents near riverbanks to remain vigilant and avoid risky areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, has forecast continued heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours. Due to potential landslides and road blockages, pilgrims on the Char Dham Yatra routes are being halted at safe locations as a precautionary measure.

Authorities in Tehri Garhwal are taking strict action to inform and stop yatris at critical points along the pilgrimage route including Tapoan, Devprayag, Kirtinagar, Narendra Nagar, Chamba, Kandisoud, Lambgaon, Chamyala, and Ghansali.

District Administration on High Alert

Tehri District Magistrate Nikita Khandelwal confirmed that the ongoing intense rainfall is posing a risk of flooding and that proactive steps are being taken to ensure public safety. In Bageshwar district, 20 internal motor routes have been blocked due to landslides and debris.

The Saryu and Gomti rivers are also flowing dangerously close to warning levels. Residents near these rivers have been alerted and advised to stay away from riverbanks.
