Washington, February 20: Renowned African-American singer Mary Millben has commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent success in the U.S.-India trade negotiations. She stated that patience and diplomacy have given India a significant advantage.
In a special interview following her performance at the Kennedy Center, Millben expressed her appreciation for both President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, stating, “It’s great that a deal has finally been reached. I certainly commend them for finding a solution.”
She praised Modi for his measured approach, saying, “I will always salute Prime Minister Modi for being very calculated. He was incredibly patient and ensured that he secured the best deal for India.”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the India-U.S. trade agreement, claiming that Modi has sold out India. Millben firmly rejected this accusation, asserting, “That is not true. You cannot take Rahul Gandhi’s words seriously. Modi got the better part of the deal because he waited patiently while the Trump administration had to figure out how to work with a very strong partner.”
Millben pointed out that several geopolitical developments have strengthened India’s position. She referenced the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Prime Minister Modi last September, as well as the recent EU-India trade deal.
She remarked, “I genuinely believe that this EU-India agreement was a wake-up call for the Trump administration. Once it happened, it became clear what needed to be done moving forward with both America and India.”
Millben emphasized that the trade agreement does not erase the months of poor diplomacy from the U.S. regarding India. She suggested that one of the most critical steps President Biden could take is to invite Modi for a state visit to the U.S. Repairing relations should be prioritized beyond just a temporary trade deal.
Highlighting India’s global positioning, Millben mentioned the AI Summit hosted by Modi, stating, “You saw it here at the AI Summit, where countries from around the world were present in India this week. If you want to do business globally, you must include India.”
She welcomed the recently announced Board of Peace initiative in Washington but cautioned against a one-sided perspective. Millben stated, “America is not dictating peace to the world; rather, the U.S. is leading the conversation about peace globally. If the president and the U.S. are dictating peace, it will not be successful.”
Millben also revealed that she is preparing new music for India’s Independence Day in August. She mentioned, “We are working on new music for India’s Independence Day.” Referring to the song “Vande Mataram,” she added, “Who knows, maybe we will have a song ready for August.”
She expressed her gratitude towards her supporters in India and the diaspora, saying, “I am very thankful to consider the Indian community around the world as my family. I am incredibly happy that millions of people are so kind to me.”
In recent years, Millben has built a strong following among Indian and Indian-American audiences through performances and public appearances during significant national occasions. She has consistently spoken about U.S.-India relations and participated in cultural events connected to the diaspora in Washington and beyond.
