Kolkata, March 14: In West Bengal’s political landscape, certain assembly seats extend their influence beyond mere electoral outcomes. The Jadavpur assembly seat in South Kolkata is one such significant constituency.
Jadavpur is categorized as a general seat, primarily falling under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, with a small portion in the South 24 Parganas district. This area comprises around ten wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and is one of the seven assembly segments of the Jadavpur Lok Sabha seat. Its entirely urban character sets it apart from many other constituencies in Bengal, as it lacks rural voters.
Established in 1967, Jadavpur has long been regarded as a stronghold of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Over the years, there have been a total of 15 elections, including a by-election in 1983, with the CPI(M) winning 13 times. This seat is particularly associated with former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who secured five consecutive victories from 1987 to 2006, making it a symbol of leftist politics.
The 2011 assembly election marked a decisive moment in Jadavpur’s history. In this election, All India Trinamool Congress candidate Manish Gupta defeated Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. This loss signified a major shift in the state’s political dynamics, as the Trinamool Congress, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, ended the 34-year rule of the Left Front. In the 2021 assembly elections, the Jadavpur seat again fell into the hands of the Trinamool Congress.
Beyond politics, Jadavpur is renowned for its educational and intellectual activities. Jadavpur University, located here, is among the country’s premier institutions of higher education, alongside several other significant scientific establishments in the area.
Currently, the local economy is primarily driven by education, healthcare, retail, and the service sector. The geography of Jadavpur is entirely urban and flat, typical of Kolkata’s southern suburbs. The area is well-connected by road and rail, with Jadavpur Railway Station serving as a key transport link connecting it to various parts of the city.
