Kolkata, March 5: In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against New Zealand, Marco Jansen scored an unbeaten 55 runs on Wednesday. With this performance, Jansen became the first South African player to score a half-century while batting at number seven or lower in a T20 World Cup knockout match.

He is also the second player globally to achieve this feat. The first was Australia’s Michael Hussey, who scored an unbeaten 60 runs off 24 balls against Pakistan in the 2010 T20 World Cup semifinal.

In the semifinal against New Zealand, Jansen batted at the seventh position. He hit 5 sixes and 2 fours in his 30-ball innings. Alongside him, Jansen formed a crucial partnership of 73 runs for the sixth wicket off 47 balls. This partnership helped South Africa post a total of 169 runs despite a poor start, losing 8 wickets.

The South African team, batting first after losing the toss, had a disastrous beginning. They lost two wickets in quick succession during the second over. Aiden Markram then partnered with Dewald Brevis (34) to add 43 runs for the third wicket. However, after Markram (18) was dismissed, the team quickly lost more wickets, managing only 77 runs for 5 wickets in 10.2 overs.

From this point, Marco Jansen, along with Tristan Stubbs, added 73 runs off 47 balls to take the team to a competitive score. Stubbs scored 29 runs off 24 balls before getting out, while Jansen remained unbeaten at 55. From the opposition, Matt Henry, Cole McConchie, and Rachin Ravindra each took 2 wickets, while Lockie Ferguson and James Neesham claimed 1 wicket each.
