
Tumkur, April 26: Abhay Singh continued his remarkable performance on the final day of the 24th National Junior (Under-20) Athletics Federation competition, securing the 200 meters title. Just two days earlier, he had claimed the gold medal in the 100 meters, completing an impressive sprint double.
The competition, held at Mahatma Gandhi Stadium, witnessed several national and meet records being shattered on its concluding day. Singh’s achievement added to the significance of the event, where young athletes showcased their talents, signaling a promising future. Most medalists also met the Asian Junior qualification marks in their respective events.
Representing Reliance, sprinter Abhay Singh dominated the 200 meters race, setting both national and meet records. His winning time of 20.82 seconds surpassed the previous national record of 21.02 seconds set by N. Srinivas in 2021. The meet record of 21.02 seconds also belonged to Srinivas.
In the men’s high jump, Basant delivered an outstanding performance, clearing 2.21 meters. He broke the meet record of 2.19 meters set by Ajay Kumar in 2015. Andhra Pradesh’s Mogli Venkataram won the 800 meters race with a time of 1:49.02, bettering both the national record of 1:46.92 set by Bint Singh in 2017 and the meet record of 1:49.59 established by Pradeep Senthil Kumar in 2022.
Poonam excelled in the women’s javelin throw, achieving a distance of 51.64 meters, surpassing the meet record of 51.10 meters set by Sumar Devi in 2004. Tamil Nadu’s Sadhana Ravi clinched gold in the women’s triple jump with a meet record of 12.97 meters, breaking the previous record of 12.87 meters set by Gayatri Govindaraj in 2009.
