Moscow, April 26: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met with the Speaker of Russia’s lower house of parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, in Pyongyang on Sunday, according to media reports.
Volodin’s visit was part of the inauguration ceremony for a memorial museum dedicated to North Korean soldiers who lost their lives fighting alongside Russian forces in the war against Ukraine.
During their meeting, Volodin conveyed greetings and congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin. He also congratulated Kim on his re-election as the “Supreme Leader” of state affairs.
“It is a great honor for us to be in Pyongyang during these days. We participated in the inauguration of the memorial complex and museum, which honors the heroes of military operations abroad,” Volodin stated. He emphasized that the Russian people would never forget the bravery of the North Korean soldiers.
According to TASS, Volodin expressed gratitude for North Korea’s supportive brotherhood, especially during the time when Korean soldiers helped liberate the Kursk region alongside Russian troops.
“We remember together all the heroes who fought for our country’s freedom, sacrificing their lives. This is truly an act of friendship,” he added.
Reports indicate that after a strategic partnership agreement between Kim and President Putin in June 2024, North Korea sent approximately 15,000 soldiers to assist Russia.
On April 26 last year, Russia announced that it had regained control of the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces, with North Korean soldiers playing a role in this effort.
Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov arrived in North Korea on Sunday, where he was welcomed at the airport by General No Gwang-chol, head of North Korea’s military department. The defense ministry stated that during this visit, the Russian minister would meet with North Korea’s top leaders and military commanders and participate in several memorial events.
