Silchar, April 5: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh emphasized on Sunday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has played a crucial role in safeguarding the state’s borders and interests.
While addressing an election rally in Rongpur to support BJP candidate Rajdeep Goala for the Assam Assembly elections, Singh also commended Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for recognizing the Manipuri language as an associate official language in Assam. He urged the Manipuri community in the state to place their trust in the Sarma-led BJP government.
Rajdeep Goala is contesting from the Udharbond constituency in Cachar district, located in southern Assam.
Praising the Manipuri community in Cachar, Singh noted their significant contribution to preserving Manipur’s culture and traditions. He stated, “The people of Cachar have always shown deep affection for Manipur. Many Manipuri kings visited Cachar to discuss important issues, as the Manipuri community here has long been a reservoir of knowledge.”
He further mentioned that the people of Cachar have consistently supported Manipur on key issues, including the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the inclusion of the Manipuri language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Criticizing the Congress party, Singh accused it of neglecting the Northeast during its long tenure, which led to unrest in the region. He claimed that while Congress exhibited indifference towards the Northeast, the BJP has consistently worked for its welfare and development.
Highlighting past initiatives, Singh recalled that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee established the ‘Northeast Region Development Department,’ marking a significant turning point for the region’s development.
Reflecting on his personal connection with Assam, Singh shared that he founded the ‘All Assam Taekwondo Association’ in 1982 and traveled extensively across the state to promote this martial art. He expressed, “Whenever I hear the name Assam, it touches my heart.”
Accompanying the Chief Minister were seven BJP legislators and Manipur BJP President A. Sharda Devi, both of whom addressed the gathering.
Later, Singh campaigned for BJP candidates in the Jiribam area, emphasizing that India’s development is incomplete without the Northeast. He highlighted the progress made in cities like Guwahati under BJP governance and appealed to the Manipuri community in Jiribam to support the party. The Chief Minister also endorsed BJP candidate Dr. Milan Das, describing him as a suitable choice with a strong background in social service.
Manipur BJP President A. Sharda Devi noted that Singh’s visit to Jiribam as Chief Minister was significant, as it had been a long time since a leader visited the area, with the late leaders M. Koiren and Rishang Kishing being the last to do so.
