Mumbai, June 10: The Maharashtra government has initiated a significant overhaul of its administrative framework by reorganizing various ministerial departments. In a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, it was decided to increase the number of administrative departments from 33 to 45.
According to the government, this move aims to boost administrative efficiency, expedite decision-making, and ensure effective implementation of welfare schemes. Under this restructuring, several sub-departments will be granted the status of independent departments.
Chief Minister Fadnavis stated that this policy is based on the concepts of “Ease of Doing Business” and “Ease of Living.” The government believes that this will improve coordination within the governance system and enhance collaboration with regional agencies.
Previously, the ministry operated with 33 departments, many of which had two to three sub-departments under a single department head. This structure often led to challenges in resource allocation and administrative operations.
Under the new framework, sub-departments will be established as separate departments under independent secretaries. Each new department will also be provided with its own administrative structure, cash branch, and registration branch.
The government clarified that no new positions will be created as part of this restructuring. The redistribution of existing approved and vacant positions will be done proportionately among the new departments.
An official notification regarding this change will be issued by the sub-department of administrative reforms, innovation, entrepreneurship, and reforms.
Additionally, the cabinet has approved amendments to the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016, concerning the final approval of new colleges, faculties, courses, subjects, and extensions for the academic year 2026-27.
Furthermore, amendments to the Maharashtra Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, have been approved to maintain alignment with the Central Goods and Services Tax Act.
The cabinet has also approved amendments to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Act, 1961, which will increase the borrowing limit of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation.
The government has already sanctioned a loan of ₹6,000 crores for the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, which will be utilized for land acquisition for the Purandar Airport project.
