New Delhi, June 15: A faction of rebel lawmakers from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially proposed joining the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) instead of forming a separate group within the Lok Sabha. This decision comes amidst discussions about creating a distinct faction in the lower house of Parliament.
The group, led by Dr. Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Shatabdi Roy, both seasoned Lok Sabha members, submitted their request to the Lok Sabha Speaker on Sunday.
Confirming their decision, Ghosh Dastidar stated that they intend to work with the NDA under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the benefit of the country.
Arup Chakraborty, a TMC MP from Bankura, also confirmed that the NCPI plans to open offices throughout West Bengal. Established in 2022, the NCPI has offices in Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal, including one in the Howrah district near Kolkata.
Previously, the rebel MPs hinted at forming a separate faction within the TMC in the Lok Sabha, similar to what was done in the West Bengal Assembly, and sought support from the NDA.
However, amidst these developments, TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker, urging that no new factions within the TMC be recognized. He argued that elected MPs cannot operate independently of the party’s policy decisions.
Following this, 20 rebel MPs met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to present their proposal regarding joining the NCPI and supporting the NDA.
