Bhopal, June 16: The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Madhya Pradesh has taken Naeem Abdullah into four-day custody on Tuesday in connection with alleged anti-national activities and a terror network. Co-accused Mohammad Faraz has been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
The accused were presented in a Bhopal court after their previous remand period ended. The ATS requested an extension of Naeem Abdullah’s custody, citing ongoing investigations that require further questioning regarding the network’s digital communications, foreign contacts, financial transactions, and other suspicious activities.
The court granted the ATS’s request, allowing Naeem Abdullah to remain in custody until June 20, while Mohammad Faraz was sent to judicial custody.
This development comes as the ATS intensifies its investigation into a suspected network that, according to preliminary findings, attempted to recruit youth through Telegram and WhatsApp groups. Investigators suspect that social media platforms were utilized to reach out to young individuals and disseminate videos and other digital content linked to suspicious activities.
According to ATS findings, Faraz allegedly created and managed several online groups to connect with youth. Investigators believe he has been active in such digital activities for nearly four years. The agency is examining electronic devices, online communications, and digital records to determine the extent of the network’s activities.
So far, four individuals have been arrested, including Mohammad Faraz from Bhopal, Naeem Abdullah from Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, Shakir Mev from Alwar in Rajasthan, and Haji Azhar from Dhar in Madhya Pradesh. The ATS has also summoned a suspect from Nuh in Haryana for questioning related to the investigation.
Officials are probing the network’s digital footprint, alleged foreign connections, and financial transactions. Sources involved in the investigation have indicated that the agency is trying to ascertain if there is any link to foreign funding channels concerning the accused and their activities. The ATS believes that further questioning of Naeem Abdullah could yield crucial insights into the network’s structure, contacts, and operations.
