New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : Delhi police have apprehended a labor contractor from Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, linked to the recent collapse of a paying guest (PG) building in Satya Niketan. The contractor, identified as Sanoj, was overseeing repair work in the building’s basement at the time of the incident. Additionally, three family members of the building’s owner have been placed in judicial and police custody for varying durations.
Sanoj was arrested and brought to Delhi for questioning. Initial investigations revealed that repairs were ongoing in the basement due to accumulated debris from heavy rainfall over the past week. Work was also being conducted on the ground floor to expand the building for commercial purposes.
Meanwhile, the building’s owner, 75-year-old Urmila, and her 81-year-old retired husband, Hariram, were presented in court and subsequently remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. Their son, Mahesh, has been placed in police custody for two days. During questioning, Mahesh disclosed that he managed the building’s maintenance on behalf of his parents and had leased the property to the PG operator “Hostel Days” in August 2025.
In response to the tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced plans to demolish a dilapidated building adjacent to the collapsed structure. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) received orders to carry out the demolition in the interest of public safety. Fire service personnel are currently retrieving students’ belongings from the building in an organized manner, with officials urging cooperation from local residents.
This demolition order follows the suspension of five municipal officials responsible for inspecting illegal constructions in the area near Dhola Kuan, close to Delhi University’s South Campus. The five-story “Hostel Days” building was housing numerous students when it collapsed around 1:30 PM on Sunday, resulting in seven fatalities.
