Kolkata, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The West Bengal government is making arrangements to book the historic Eden Gardens stadium for the grand Durga Puja celebrations this year. A letter has been sent to the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) requesting the stadium’s availability from September 25 to October 15, 2026.
In a communication from the Youth Services and Sports Department, the CAB secretary was informed that the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs has requested a series of cultural and festive events as part of Durga Puja 2026. This includes a major cultural program that necessitates the use of Eden Gardens.
The government clarified in its letter that the requested period includes time for both event preparations and post-event arrangements. This timeframe coincides with the main days of the Durga Puja festival.
The letter, numbered 2005-SP/1M-64/26, was issued by the West Bengal government’s secretary on September 8, 2026. It references correspondence from the secretary of the Information and Cultural Affairs Department. The state government has urged CAB to prioritize this request and confirm the availability and booking of Eden Gardens by September 11, so that event planning and related arrangements can be finalized.
Durga Puja in West Bengal is more than just a festival; it is a significant cultural event recognized by UNESCO as part of its intangible cultural heritage. Each year, the state government organizes extensive Durga Puja carnivals and cultural programs in Kolkata.
Eden Gardens is the oldest cricket stadium in India and the second largest in the world. It has a history of hosting major government and cultural events. However, discussions have intensified regarding the long-term booking for the festival, especially since the cricket season also begins in October.
