Colombo, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Defense Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the significant role India and Sri Lanka play in ensuring security and stability in the Indian Ocean region. Speaking in Colombo on September 9, he stated that the sea does not divide the two nations but instead connects them through deep and enduring people-to-people ties. He emphasized that both countries share not only a long-standing friendship but also a rich cultural, historical, and civilizational heritage.
Singh addressed a welcoming ceremony aboard the Indian Navy ship INS Udaygiri, which is currently visiting Sri Lanka. He noted that the ship’s journey symbolizes India’s commitment to working closely with its Sri Lankan friends for mutual welfare. The INS Udaygiri has brought essential equipment and spare parts to support Sri Lanka, including components for the Indian Air Force’s Indra MK-2 radar and supplies for the Sri Lankan Navy’s Sayura ship.
The Defense Minister pointed out that capacity building has been a cornerstone of the bilateral defense cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. He reaffirmed India’s dedication to meeting the needs of the Sri Lankan armed forces while considering their interests and priorities.
Singh stressed the importance of maritime cooperation between the two nations. He expressed optimism about the potential for deeper collaboration in this area, which is vital for the peace, security, and stability of the region. He referenced India’s “Neighborhood First” policy, stating that true neighbors are those who step forward to help in times of need. This assistance is not merely a duty but a strong affirmation of friendship and affection.
He concluded by assuring that India would remain a committed partner in enhancing the capabilities of Sri Lanka’s armed forces. Future collaborations will extend beyond defense to include training, capacity building, and maritime security initiatives.
