Kolkata, August 30: Kunal Ghosh, a leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has sharply criticized the suggestions made by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) regarding Durga Puja in West Bengal. He emphasized that Durga Puja is not only a religious tradition but also a vital part of social harmony and the economy in Bengal. The participation of all community segments during the festival is a hallmark of Bengal’s culture.
Ghosh stated that Durga Puja is a sensitive topic that requires thoughtful commentary. This festival has been celebrated for centuries in Bengal, evolving from a purely religious event to a celebration embraced by society as a whole. Various communities are economically involved in the purchase of items ranging from clothing to flowers during the festivities.
He pointed out that non-vegetarian food is generally not served in Durga Puja pandals, indicating that there is no need for new directives on this matter. Ghosh mentioned that different traditions within Hinduism, such as the practice of sacrifice, should not lead to unilateral rules being imposed on religious customs.
In response to VHP’s call for maintaining a traditional religious atmosphere in pandals, Ghosh noted that Bengal has always celebrated Durga Puja in classical and traditional ways. The introduction of theme-based pandals and artistic decorations has enhanced the beauty of the festival. He highlighted that many themed pandals still feature the traditional representation of Goddess Durga. The involvement of the younger generation, artists, and new art styles has given the festival a unique identity. The UNESCO recognition of Bengal’s Durga Puja as an intangible cultural heritage underscores its extensive cultural significance.
Regarding the VHP, Ghosh warned that if the organization’s members pressure various puja committees to dictate their practices, it could lead to disputes during the celebrations. He questioned the necessity of central forces during Durga Puja and advocated for allowing puja committees to organize their events according to their traditions.
Linking Durga Puja to Bengal’s economy, he noted that the festival stimulates economic activities related to clothing, flowers, decorations, and both small and large businesses. This is why it is viewed as a broader celebration rather than just a religious event.
Ghosh also addressed the FIR filed against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, labeling it politically motivated. He affirmed that the TMC respects court orders and strives to comply with the High Court‘s directives during events. He added that managing crowd control is also the police’s responsibility.
On the issue of a legal notice allegedly issued against TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee‘s office, Ghosh stated he was not fully informed about the matter. When asked about the office allegedly being occupied without a Completion Certificate (CC), he remarked that the concerned parties could provide better information.
Raising concerns about the alleged assault on Tauqeer Alam while in custody, Ghosh claimed that Alam sustained serious injuries and was admitted to SSKM Hospital. He accused the authorities of repeated incidents in custody and called for a fair investigation into the matter. Ghosh insisted that Alam should receive proper medical treatment and that an inquiry should determine how he sustained such severe injuries while in police custody. He demanded an independent investigation, emphasizing that the administration is responsible for the safety of individuals in custody.
