Kolkata, August 29: Kolkata Police have issued a summons to Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and MP from Diamond Harbour, regarding the removal of illegal hoardings. The notice was delivered to his residence on Kalighat Road on Saturday night, requiring him to appear at the Shakespeare Sarani police station on September 1 at 12 PM.
This case is linked to a dispute that arose during the removal of alleged illegal hoardings from the roof of the TMC office located on Camac Street in central Kolkata. When the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and police team arrived to take down the hoardings on Thursday, TMC supporters reportedly protested the action.
Following the incident, three FIRs were filed at the Shakespeare Sarani police station. Two of these FIRs name Abhishek Banerjee along with several senior TMC leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien.
The allegations state that the involved leaders and supporters attempted to obstruct government officials in the performance of their duties. The FIRs also include accusations of assaulting on-duty police officers and attempts to violate the dignity of a female officer.
As part of the investigation, police have begun reviewing CCTV footage from the scene. Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nanda stated that officials were prevented from performing their duties, and a thorough investigation is underway.
According to police, 14 individuals have already been arrested in connection with the actions initiated after the dispute, and the investigation is ongoing.
