Kathmandu, August 30: In response to the recent disaster in Nepal, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal described it as one of the country’s most significant natural calamities. Under the direction of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, all agencies are engaged in rescue operations, successfully evacuating over 4,000 individuals, including more than 200 foreign nationals.
Khanal expressed gratitude to India for its immediate assistance, stating that the Indian government has been sending relief materials and expert teams from the very first day. The Nepalese government and its citizens are thankful for this support.
He noted that this disaster is among the most severe that Nepal has faced in recent times. Upon receiving news of the catastrophe, Prime Minister Shah convened an emergency meeting of the National Disaster Council, followed by a cabinet meeting.
The Prime Minister instructed all government agencies to collaborate and provide every possible assistance. Currently, the primary focus is on the rescue operation, ensuring the safety of those in the affected areas.
As of now, over 4,000 individuals have been rescued, including more than 200 foreign nationals. Khanal mentioned that on the first day of the disaster, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to assure support from the Indian government. He also communicated with his counterpart, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, to discuss Nepal’s needs.
The Indian government has already dispatched aircraft loaded with relief supplies and sent teams of experts to assist in rescue operations. Khanal expressed deep appreciation for this aid, thanking the Indian government on behalf of the Nepalese government and its people for their proactive cooperation.
He emphasized that he has personally communicated with counterparts from various countries, assuring them that the Nepalese government is prioritizing the rescue of foreign nationals. The commitment to ensuring the safety of foreign citizens is as strong as that for Nepalese citizens.
Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established a dedicated helpline where anyone, especially foreign nationals, can seek assistance.
