Kolkata, August 30: A shooting incident in the North Port area of Kolkata has caused widespread panic. One individual has been injured and was promptly taken to the hospital. Currently, his condition is reported as stable.
Police officials reported that the incident occurred shortly after midnight. The injured man has been identified as Santosh Chaudhary, while the shooter is identified as Kartik Sonkar.
Initial reports suggest that the shooting stemmed from a family dispute. It has come to light that Chaudhary and Sonkar are relatives. Investigations revealed that Sonkar had previously threatened Chaudhary’s life.
According to police, Sonkar and his accomplice, P.K. Thakur, approached the area near Ghat Road after midnight. Chaudhary was already present there. Upon spotting him, the assailants opened fire, hitting Chaudhary in the abdomen. As he fell, Sonkar and Thakur fled the scene.
Local residents rushed to the site upon hearing the commotion. Chaudhary was transported to Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, where his condition remains stable.
Meanwhile, officials at the North Port police station have initiated a search for Sonkar. A case has been registered under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempted murder. Charges have also been filed under the Arms Act of 1959.
A senior officer from Kolkata Police stated, “The incident occurred just after midnight. The assailants fired multiple rounds at the young man, hitting him in the abdomen. Local residents took him to the hospital, where he is currently stable. A case has been filed against the assailants, and a search for their arrest is underway. The investigation is ongoing.”
