Kolkata, August 30: A woman in West Bengal was arrested while attempting to sell her two-month-old baby. The incident was thwarted by vigilant personnel from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). The woman claimed the child was her own. The transaction was set to take place at a bus stand near the India-Nepal border in Bihar on Friday.
An SSB officer reported that following a tip-off about the attempted sale, a joint team from the 41st Battalion SSB’s A and G Companies launched an operation at the Galgalia bus stand in Kishanganj district, Bihar.
During the operation, a 37-year-old woman was apprehended, and a baby boy, born on June 19, 2026, was safely rescued. Initial questioning revealed that the woman intended to sell the child for 250,000 rupees.
The arrested woman has been identified as Rinku Yadav, a resident of the Hatkhola area in Bagdogra, and the wife of Arjun Yadav. She stated that financial difficulties prompted her to plan the sale. She was supposed to hand over the baby to an unidentified person from Rajasthan at the Bhathgaon-Galgalia bus stand.
Both the woman and the child have been handed over to the Galgalia police station for further investigation. Authorities are now working to uncover the full truth of the case and whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged transaction.
The operation also involved the SSB’s Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) from Ranidanga and the non-governmental organization, Relief Organization, based in Kishanganj. A senior police officer noted, “The woman continues to assert that the child is hers. This will be verified. We have contacted officials in Bagdogra and may conduct a DNA test if necessary.”
The officer also mentioned that even if it is proven that the child is hers, it must be determined whether the baby should be returned to her, as the risk of further attempts to sell the child cannot be dismissed.
