Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari Appointed Chief Justice of Madras High Court

New Delhi, March 5: The central government has approved the appointment of Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, following a recommendation from the Supreme Court Collegium.

Union Minister of Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced this on the social media platform X. He stated that President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Dharmadhikari after consulting with the Chief Justice of India. This appointment will take effect from the date he assumes office.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended Justice Dharmadhikari for the position during its meeting on February 26. The Collegium was led by Chief Justice of India, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.

Justice Dharmadhikari originally hails from the Madhya Pradesh High Court and is currently serving as a judge in the Kerala High Court. He will take over the responsibilities after the retirement of the current Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, on March 5.

Born on July 9, 1966, in Raipur, Justice Dharmadhikari was appointed as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in April 2016. He became a permanent judge on March 17, 2018.

Before his judicial career, Justice Dharmadhikari practiced as a lawyer in the Madhya Pradesh High Court for nearly 24 years, specializing in civil, criminal, and constitutional matters. Last year, he was transferred from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Kerala High Court. In April 2025, the Ministry of Law and Justice issued a notification confirming his transfer under Article 222 of the Constitution, following consultation with the Chief Justice of India.

The Supreme Court’s statement indicated that the Collegium had recommended Justice Dharmadhikari’s transfer during meetings held on March 20, March 24, and April 3, 2025.
