Belfast, June 26: Ireland has made history by securing its first-ever T20 victory against India. In a match held at the Civil Service Cricket Club, the home team triumphed by 34 runs. Captain Lorcan Tucker emphasized that their hard work and discipline throughout the game paid off.
In the first match of the T20 series, Ireland scored 182 runs while losing 9 wickets. In response, the Indian team was bowled out for just 148 runs in 18.5 overs.
Following the win against India, Captain Tucker stated, “This victory is very special for me, but the credit goes entirely to the players. I believe we won this match through hard work. There were many challenging moments, but we never gave up. We remained disciplined and kept working hard, and in the end, we reaped the rewards.”
Ireland’s victory came against a team that had recently claimed the T20 World Cup title. Tucker remarked, “This win is undoubtedly significant. Defeating the reigning world champions India at home in the first T20 match of the season is a major achievement, but the credit belongs to the players. We had two debutants who performed exceptionally well. Everyone involved with Cricket Ireland works diligently behind the scenes, and we want to honor their efforts with such results.”
During the powerplay, Ireland managed only 36 runs while losing 3 wickets. Nevertheless, the home team posted a substantial score of 182/9. The captain partnered with Gareth Delany for the fifth wicket, scoring 64 runs off 44 balls. Reflecting on the partnership, Tucker said, “India bowled exceptionally well at the start. They consistently bowled at the right length and did not deviate. Scoring runs off good deliveries was quite challenging. At one point, it felt like we were playing a Test match, but we maintained our patience, focused on building partnerships, and capitalized on the opportunities when they arose.”
In this match, debutant Jai Moondra took 2 wickets for 26 runs, while Matthew Hogard was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his 3 wickets at 28 runs. Expressing his satisfaction with their performances, Tucker noted, “They showed tremendous fighting spirit. We learned a lot from India’s first innings. The Indian bowlers maintained their length, and we instructed our players to do the same. They demonstrated accuracy, skill, and the ability to consistently bowl in the right areas, making it difficult for Indian batsmen to score runs. The credit goes entirely to them. They worked hard and executed the team’s plans effectively.”
As the Indian team aims to equalize the series in the second and final match on June 28, the home team hopes to clinch their first T20 series victory against India.
Ireland has a fantastic opportunity ahead. Captain Tucker stated, “Winning the series at home against India would be incredibly special. All the players are very excited for the next match. The atmosphere at the ground today was fantastic, and the support from the crowd made this experience memorable for us.”
