According to the United Nations, this day serves as a tribute to the work of language professionals. These individuals play a crucial role in uniting nations, facilitating dialogue, promoting understanding and cooperation, contributing to development, and enhancing global peace and security.
The translation of literary or scientific works, including technical texts, is essential for maintaining clarity and productivity in international discourse and interpersonal communication. This professional translation encompasses not only written text but also interpretation and terminology.
On May 24, 2017, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288, recognizing the role of language professionals in connecting nations and promoting peace, understanding, and development. Consequently, September 30 was designated as International Translation Day.
This date also commemorates St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators. St. Jerome was a priest from northeastern Italy, renowned for translating most of the Bible from Greek manuscripts into Latin. He also translated portions of the Hebrew Gospel into Greek.
According to the United Nations, St. Jerome was of Illyrian descent and spoke Illyrian as his mother tongue. He learned Latin in school and became fluent in Greek and Hebrew during his studies and travels. He passed away on September 30, 420, near Bethlehem.
