India Opts to Bowl First in T20 Series Opener Against Ireland

Belfast, June 26: India won the toss and chose to bowl first in the opening match of the T20 series against Ireland at the Civil Service Cricket Club on Friday. This series marks the beginning of a new chapter in Indian cricket under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer.

Fans were eagerly anticipating the debut of 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryaanshi, but they will have to wait a bit longer. Meanwhile, Ireland’s team saw Jay Moondra make his international debut, having been born in Rajasthan.

Iyer last played a T20 match for India in December 2023, and after a gap of two and a half years, he returns as captain. After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Iyer stated, “We will bowl first. This is a new pitch for us, and it’s our first time playing in Belfast. Considering the conditions, atmosphere, and wicket, we want to bowl first. We need to adapt to the local conditions as quickly as possible. We will focus on one match at a time. We always say not to complicate things.”

Unfortunately, 15-year-old opener Vaibhav Suryaanshi is not playing in this match. The captain commented, “It’s unfortunate that Vaibhav is not playing. He will get his chance at the right time. For now, we are going with three fast bowlers and one all-rounder.”

On the other hand, Ireland’s captain, Lorcan Tucker, expressed, “I would have chosen to bowl if I had won the toss. The pitch looks very good. It’s a time of change. Over the past few years, Stirl (Paul Stirling) has led the team excellently. Today, Jay (Moondra) is making his debut.”

In the T20 format, India and Ireland have faced each other in eight matches, with India winning all of them. The Indian team aims to continue this winning streak in the series.

India’s Playing XI: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dubey, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna.

Ireland’s Playing XI: Tim Tector, Ross Adair, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker (wicketkeeper/captain), Benjamin Kallitz, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Liam McCarthy, Matthew Humphries, Jay Moondra, and Matthew Holland.
