New Delhi, February 10: The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has been granted full membership in the International Boxing Association (IBA). This decision was made during the IBA board meeting on February 6, 2026.
An official letter from Lausanne, Switzerland, announced the IABF’s full membership on February 9.
IBA President Umar Kremlev praised IABF head Rakesh Mishra in a letter, commending the federation’s commitment to the sport of boxing, its transparent governance, and adherence to international standards.
“I am delighted to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation for receiving full membership in the International Boxing Association, as decided by the IBA Board of Directors on February 6, 2026. Your commitment to the sport of boxing and the standards set by your federation have earned you a rightful place in the IBA family,” Kremlev stated.
The letter further expressed, “We are thrilled to have your national federation with us and look forward to the positive contributions and cooperation that will undoubtedly strengthen our shared commitment to the development of boxing worldwide.”
Welcoming the IABF into the global boxing community, Kremlev expressed confidence that the federation’s active participation would significantly contribute to the sport’s development worldwide. He emphasized that India’s inclusion would inject new energy and direction into the global boxing movement.
As a full member, the IABF is now officially invited to participate in upcoming international tournaments and events under the IBA.
The association anticipates that Indian boxers will strengthen the global community and pave the way for a long-lasting, fruitful collaboration between the two organizations.
IABF President Mishra highlighted this milestone as crucial for Indian boxing, noting that full membership would provide Indian boxers with access to the best training methods, technical support, and invaluable exposure in international competitions.
IABF Secretary General Rakesh Thakran stated that this recognition aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of providing more opportunities for Indian athletes at the Olympic level.
He added that the IABF would focus on identifying grassroots talent and training them in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games.
Thakran also emphasized the importance of working under the guidance of Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur, to ensure the overall development of Indian boxers and strong international representation, especially in the Olympic Games.
