New Delhi, June 26: PT Usha has carved a remarkable niche in the world of track and field, achieving what every athlete dreams of. Her significant contributions have popularized women’s athletics in India. Her journey began at the tender age of nine when she defeated a school champion, setting the stage for numerous accomplishments.
Born on June 27, 1964, in Payyoli village, Kozhikode district, Kerala, Usha faced poverty during her childhood. At one point, she could not afford to buy shoes. Her passion for running emerged during her school days. At just nine years old, she first showcased her talent by astonishing everyone and defeating a school champion who was three years her senior in a competition.
While studying in school, Usha began participating in district-level competitions. Wherever she went, her running prowess made her the talk of the town. Recognizing her talent, the Kerala government awarded her a scholarship of 250 rupees, a significant amount for Usha, who grew up in challenging circumstances. This support enabled her to continue her training and education at a specialized school.
In 1976, Usha caught the attention of coach O.M. Nambiar with her impressive performance at the National School Games, and she never looked back. Her international career began in 1980 when she excelled at the Pakistan Open National Meet in Karachi, winning four gold medals.
Usha represented India in the 1980, 1984, and 1988 Olympics, narrowly missing out on medals for her country. In the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, she made history by becoming the first Indian female athlete to reach the finals. Her most outstanding achievements came at the Asian Games, where she won a total of 11 medals, including four golds. Additionally, she secured 23 medals at the Asian Athletics Championships.
At just 20 years old, Usha was honored with the Arjuna Award by the government. In 1985, she received the Padma Shri. Fans have given her several nicknames, including “Payyoli Express,” “India’s Flying Fairy,” “Golden Girl,” and “Queen of Track and Field.” In 2022, PT Usha was elected as the President of the Indian Olympic Association, a position she continues to hold.
