Raipur, April 4: Police have arrested five individuals in connection with the brutal murder of a 29-year-old man near Abhanpur. The victim was allegedly beaten severely before being buried alive in a mining area.
The deceased was a Pakistani citizen who had been residing in Raipur, hoping to obtain citizenship. He succumbed to his injuries five days later, reportedly due to dirt obstructing his mouth and airway.
A police investigator stated, “One suspect is still at large.” The victim, Nitesh Batra, was not an Indian citizen and was working in the city.
The main accused, Shyam Sundar Soni, who runs a vegetable shop, was reportedly involved with a woman. On the night of March 16, Nitesh visited Shyam’s home, where a dispute escalated into violence. Shyam and two of his employees brutally assaulted Nitesh with sticks, causing severe head injuries.
According to police, Nitesh was placed in an auto-rickshaw in a semi-conscious state and transported approximately 40 kilometers to a deserted mining area between Parasulidih and Philgabhatha, near the Madhya Pradesh border. There, the assailants continued to beat him, attempted to strangle him with a cloth, and ultimately buried him alive.
Reports indicate that the auto-rickshaw passed through the jurisdictions of four police stations: Maudhapara, Mana, Tikrapara, and Abhanpur, raising questions about police vigilance.
On March 21, his body was discovered in a roadside pit near Bharvagbhatha, with one hand and foot protruding. The autopsy confirmed that he had been buried alive.
The Abhanpur police registered a case and arrested five suspects from Uttar Pradesh, including Shyam Sundar Soni, Sonia Sahu, Sumit Kosle, and two minors. One suspect remains at large. Police have also seized an auto-rickshaw, sticks, and other items.
Police officials described the crime as “extremely heinous and shocking.” They emphasized that the suspects crossed all limits of cruelty by burying a semi-conscious person alive. A special investigation team has been formed to locate the remaining suspect, and strict action will be taken against all offenders.
Another senior officer mentioned that all aspects of the case are under investigation. The suspects will be presented in court, and justice will be sought for the victim.
The incident has created a climate of fear in Raipur. Local residents are demanding increased patrols on highways and better coordination between police stations to prevent such occurrences in the future. The investigation is ongoing.
