Chennai, April 6: The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections are set for April 23, and political parties are in the final stages of candidate selection and campaigning.
The Congress party, a key ally in the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, has been allocated 28 constituencies for the 2026 Assembly elections. They have now officially announced their candidate for the Melur Assembly constituency.
After several days of internal discussions and reported disagreements among senior leaders, Congress has finalized P. Vishwanathan as their candidate, putting an end to speculation surrounding this seat.
According to party sources, the delay in announcing the Melur candidate was due to differences among senior Congress leaders. There were suggestions to nominate a Youth Congress leader for this constituency. However, it is believed that the final decision was influenced by senior leader P. Chidambaram, whose intervention reportedly played a crucial role in Vishwanathan’s selection.
P. Vishwanathan is an experienced Congress leader and a former MP from the Kanchipuram constituency. He currently serves as the National Secretary of Congress and is responsible for party affairs in Telangana.
Known for his organizational experience, Vishwanathan had recently expressed his desire to contest from a general constituency, which is now realized with his nomination from Melur.
Previously, Congress had released a list of candidates for 27 constituencies in Tamil Nadu, including significant seats like Ponnery, Tiruperumbudur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikudi, Sivakasi, Krishnagiri, and Ambasamudram.
With the announcement of Vishwanathan’s candidacy, Congress has completed its list of candidates for all 28 constituencies allocated under the alliance arrangement.
The focus now shifts to intensifying the election campaign, as the DMK-led alliance aims to retain power in Tamil Nadu amid a multi-cornered contest against the AIADMK alliance and other regional parties.
