Amritsar, April 5: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Amritsar police have arrested two individuals linked to an international drug smuggling operation, seizing 4.13 kilograms of heroin in the process.
Initial investigations reveal that the arrested suspects were in direct contact with handlers based in Europe and operatives incarcerated in local jails. According to police reports, these individuals were responsible for smuggling narcotics across the border into India, specifically targeting the Majha and Doaba regions for distribution. The operation aimed to increase local drug consumption.
Authorities noted that both suspects have prior criminal records, with multiple cases registered against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Arms Act. Following their arrest, police have commenced interrogations to identify other members of the network and understand the operational dynamics.
An FIR has been filed at the Sultanwind police station in Amritsar. Police officials stated that a thorough investigation is underway to dismantle the entire network. They believe this success will not only reduce drug trafficking in Amritsar but throughout Punjab as well.
The police have urged the public to assist in providing information against such criminals and to remain vigilant about suspicious activities in their surroundings. They emphasized their commitment to making Punjab drug-free and secure.
Previously, a case involving heroin smuggling from Pakistan was reported in Gurdaspur. During a search operation in the fields near the Ravi River, the Border Security Force (BSF) discovered a drone along with a packet of heroin.
The Gurdaspur district administration and BSF have stated that preventing heroin smuggling via drones is a top priority. Continuous patrols and search operations are being conducted to thwart materials sent across the border. This action is crucial for both local and national security, as stopping drug trafficking is essential for safeguarding regional stability and protecting the youth.
