Guwahati, April 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded sharply on Sunday to allegations of corruption made by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Sarma questioned the credibility of these claims, suggesting they were politically motivated.
While addressing a public gathering, CM Sarma stated that neither the people of Assam nor the courts of the country have found any basis for the allegations against him. In a pointed response to Gandhi’s warning of legal action, Sarma challenged those making such claims to present evidence first.
He raised the question of how someone could be imprisoned without any proof, labeling the allegations as an attempt to mislead voters. Sarma emphasized that the development and administrative record of his government in Assam stands in stark contrast to the empty rhetoric of the opposition.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of being the most corrupt and communal Chief Minister in the country during a rally. He claimed that the people of Assam have been deceived and misled, promising legal action if Congress comes to power in the state.
Gandhi also referenced renowned Assamese musician Jubin Garg, stating that Garg has worked to unite people throughout his life and has never engaged in divisive behavior. He described the Congress ideology as one that promotes love and tolerance.
He accused the BJP-led Assam government of fostering division among communities for political gain, asserting that Assam’s identity has always been based on coexistence and mutual respect, which the current government is undermining.
With elections scheduled for April 9, the heated exchanges between the two leaders reflect the intensifying electoral competition in Assam, where both parties are actively campaigning to garner voter support.
