Mathura, April 6: Police reported on Sunday that a 29-year-old man, accused of raping and robbing a woman from Haryana, has been arrested following a confrontation in Mathura.
The suspect has been identified as Pawan Kumar, a resident of Mal Farah village in Mathura. He sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the incident and has been hospitalized for treatment.
According to police, a team from the Jait police station, led by Inspector Umesh Chandra Tripathi, was conducting routine checks near Sun City on Saturday night. At approximately 9:53 PM, the police signaled a motorcyclist to stop based on suspicion. The suspect ignored the order, attempted to flee, and allegedly fired at the police.
Authorities stated that the police returned fire, hitting the suspect in the leg, which led to his fall and subsequent arrest at the scene.
During interrogation, police discovered that Pawan Kumar had created a fake identity on social media under the name Abhay Fauji. Using this alias, he allegedly threatened a woman from Palwal district in Haryana, coercing her to meet him in Chhattikara.
From there, he took the woman to Raj Guest House on his motorcycle, where he raped her and later abandoned her near Chhattikara Bridge.
Investigators revealed that the suspect transferred ₹15,000 online from the victim’s phone. Additionally, he reportedly stole ₹4,000 in cash and the woman’s earrings before fleeing.
During the arrest, police recovered a country-made pistol, two empty cartridges, one live cartridge, and the motorcycle used in the crime from the suspect.
Circle Officer (Sadar) Pithampal Singh noted that the accused has a lengthy criminal history, with 11 serious cases filed against him for rape, attempted murder, robbery, and violations of the NDPS Act in Mathura and Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.
The police team involved in the operation included Jait Station Officer Umesh Chandra Tripathi, Inspector Vivek Kumar, and female sub-inspectors Kajal Bhardwaj and Priya Siwach, along with members of the surveillance unit.
Officials confirmed that the injured suspect is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Vrindavan under police supervision.
