New Delhi, April 6: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi welcomed the call for a special parliamentary session on the Women’s Reservation Bill. She emphasized the need for increased female participation in politics, advocating for a 33% reservation for women.
In an interview with a news agency in New Delhi, Chaturvedi stated that women must have full participation in governance. “I support this initiative and will continue to do so. Women have been fighting for their rights for the past 25 years,” she remarked.
Chaturvedi pointed out that the Constitution grants equal rights to all, yet restrictions have prevented women from attaining their rightful place in politics. She insisted that both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies should benefit from the 33% reservation for women, urging more women to enter politics and raise their issues in Parliament.
She noted that the Women’s Reservation Bill was expected to pass before 2024, but criticized the government’s limited understanding and vision, stating that they are only now considering amendments after a year and a half.
Chaturvedi further asserted that any law passed should be implemented immediately. She recalled that when reservations for local body elections were introduced, they were applied right away, yet the Women’s Reservation Bill has not been enforced. “They said it would be implemented by 2029,” she added.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader also mentioned that the government linked the Women’s Reservation Bill to the new census and delimitation, knowing that this would not be feasible. As a result, they are now compelled to base it on the 2011 census.
