Election Commission Transfers Police Officials Ahead of Kolkatas Second Phase Voting

Kolkata, April 26: The Election Commission has ordered the transfer of three police station heads in Kolkata as of Saturday evening. This includes the station responsible for the area where West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s official residence is located.

The transfers of these three officers, all of whom hold the rank of inspector, come just four days before the second phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal, scheduled for April 29. A total of 142 assembly constituencies will vote in this phase, including areas in Kolkata.

Among those transferred is Utpal Ghosh, the officer in charge of the Kalighat police station, which oversees the chief minister’s residence on Harish Chatterjee Street. Gautam Das has been appointed to replace Ghosh; he previously served as an inspector in the Kolkata Police’s Special Branch.

The Election Commission also ordered the transfer of Uttam Paik, the additional officer in charge of the Kalighat police station. Additionally, changes were made to the heads of the Alipore and Ultadanga women’s police stations, with Subrata Pandey taking over at Alipore.

Chameli Mukherjee has been appointed as the new head of the Ultadanga women’s police station, having previously served as the additional officer in charge at Alipore.

The transfers at Kalighat police station are significant for two reasons. Firstly, the chief minister’s official residence falls under its jurisdiction. Secondly, Kalighat is one of the police stations in the high-profile Bhawanipur assembly constituency, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faces off against opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari in this election cycle.
