Modi Congratulates Ethiopias Prosperity Party on Election Victory

New Delhi, June 23: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and his Prosperity Party on their significant victory in the parliamentary elections held in Ethiopia.

In a message posted on the social media platform ‘X’, PM Modi expressed, “Heartfelt congratulations to my friend Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and the Prosperity Party for their remarkable win in Ethiopia’s parliamentary elections.”

He emphasized the importance of India’s historical, multifaceted, and deep-rooted relationship with Ethiopia. “I recall my visit to Ethiopia last year, and I am excited to work together to strengthen the strategic partnership and friendship between our two nations,” he added.

PM Modi’s congratulatory message came after the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced on Sunday that the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) secured victory in the country’s seventh general election, paving the way for the formation of a new government.

While releasing the official election results in Addis Ababa, NEBE reported that the Prosperity Party won 438 out of 486 seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives during the elections held on June 1.

According to Ethiopia’s constitution, the political party or coalition that gains a majority in the House of Representatives is responsible for forming the government and appointing the Prime Minister.

PM Modi visited Ethiopia last December, which further strengthened the ties between India and Ethiopia. During his visit, he stated that India is ready to enhance cooperation in areas such as digital public infrastructure, mining, critical minerals, clean energy, food security, and agriculture.

Both leaders also reviewed progress in trade and investment, new technologies, education, and capacity building. PM Modi noted that Indian companies have invested over $5 billion in Ethiopia’s economy, particularly in essential sectors like manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, creating jobs for more than 75,000 local people.

Additionally, PM Modi addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, an honor bestowed upon him during his first bilateral visit.
