Shillong, June 23: Meghalaya’s Chief Minister Conrad Sangma emphasized the need for a comprehensive renewable energy strategy for the state during a review meeting on Tuesday. He stated that the effective implementation of the central government’s PM Surya Home—free electricity scheme should be accompanied by the exploration of new clean energy options suited to the state’s geographical conditions.
Chairing the review meeting at the state guest house in Shillong, the Chief Minister instructed officials to develop a detailed action plan to promote the use of renewable energy, enhance public participation, and strengthen awareness campaigns.
The meeting assessed the progress of the PM Surya Home-free electricity scheme, which aims to provide up to 300 units of free electricity monthly by installing solar power plants on rooftops. The central government also offers financial assistance of up to ₹78,000 for this initiative.
Officials informed the Chief Minister about the challenges faced in implementing the scheme in Meghalaya. High transportation costs, difficult geographical terrain, and limited rooftop space for solar installations are significant factors contributing to increased installation costs.
The Chief Minister noted that adopting solar energy should be made more beneficial and attractive for the public. He stressed the need to focus on quick returns on investment and maximizing consumer benefits.
He also suggested that the PM Surya scheme should be integrated with the state’s other renewable energy initiatives, particularly the Chief Minister’s Solar Mission.
Highlighting the need for energy storage, the Chief Minister proposed exploring battery-based solar energy systems. He believes this would enhance the reliability of electricity supply and provide greater benefits of solar energy to the public.
Additionally, he directed officials to explore the feasibility of installing solar power plants on rooftops of government offices, schools, anganwadi centers, and other public institutions, emphasizing the utilization of central government assistance for these projects.
He pointed out the necessity of raising public awareness about renewable energy and energy conservation, suggesting that schools, colleges, and youth organizations be involved in this campaign.
With long-term energy security in mind, the Chief Minister called for work on decentralized renewable energy options such as biomass, biogas, micro-hydropower projects, and solar energy-based community structures in rural and remote areas.
At the end of the meeting, officials were instructed to devise a coordinated strategy that would reduce electricity costs, increase the use of clean energy, and strengthen Meghalaya’s sustainable energy future.
