Nagpur, July 11: An alarming case of fraud has emerged in the Imamwada area of Nagpur, where an 81-year-old woman was conned out of approximately ₹3.05 lakhs worth of gold jewelry and a mobile phone. The police have registered a case and initiated an investigation, forming two special teams to track down the suspects.
The fraudsters posed as individuals connected to religious faith, convincing the elderly woman that “Mother Jagdamba is upset with you,” and warned of impending danger to her family.
According to police reports, Sujata Bhagwarlal Agarwal, a resident of Medical Road, was on her way to her daughter’s house after visiting a temple. During her journey, two unidentified young men approached her. One claimed, “Mother Jagdamba is angry with you,” while the other warned of serious threats to her and her sons. They then lured her into a false ritual to avert the supposed crisis.
The suspects handed the woman a yellow bag, instructing her to place her gold chain, bangles, other jewelry, and mobile phone inside for the ritual. They told her not to look back for 51 steps, assuring her that this would ensure the success of the prayer and avert the danger.
As soon as she moved forward, the two men fled with her valuables. It was only after walking a short distance and looking back that she realized she had been duped. She promptly reported the incident to the Imamwada police station.
The police have begun analyzing CCTV footage from nearby areas. Initial investigations revealed that not two, but four suspects were involved in the crime, all of whom escaped on a motorcycle. Efforts are underway to identify them based on the footage.
Inspector Jaywant Patil from the Imamwada police station stated that the suspects spoke Hindi. Preliminary investigations suggest they may be from Madhya Pradesh or Uttar Pradesh. The police have formed two special teams to apprehend the culprits, utilizing technical evidence and CCTV footage in their search.
Authorities have urged citizens, especially the elderly, to be cautious and not fall for the tricks of unknown individuals. They emphasized that handing over valuables in the name of religious faith or superstition can lead to such scams. Reporting such incidents to the police immediately is the most effective measure.
