Lucknow, July 11: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to appoint administrators for all 75 district panchayats in the state. This decision was announced late Friday night through a government order issued by the Panchayati Raj Department.
The current five-year term of the district panchayat presidents will end on July 11, and until the formation of new panchayats, the outgoing presidents will manage the regular operations as administrators. According to the order, the term of the district panchayats formed in 2021 will conclude on July 11, 2026. Under Section 20(3-k) of the Uttar Pradesh Panchayat and District Panchayat Act, 1961, the government has decided to designate the outgoing district panchayat presidents as administrators until the new panchayats are formed or for a maximum period of six months.
District magistrates have been authorized to appoint the respective outgoing district panchayat presidents as administrators. These administrators will only handle routine administrative tasks and will not make any policy decisions. In special circumstances, policy proposals will be sent to the government through the district magistrate.
This decision by the government was taken based on a proposal from the Panchayati Raj Department. The first meeting of the district panchayat presidents after the three-tier panchayat elections in 2021 took place on July 12, 2021, marking the completion of their five-year term on Saturday, July 11.
Earlier, on May 26, when the term of village panchayat heads ended, the state government appointed the outgoing village heads as administrators for the first time, a responsibility that was previously assigned to officials. This same system has now been implemented for district panchayats as well.
According to government sources, a similar arrangement is being prepared for block panchayats. The term of block chiefs will end on July 19, and orders for appointing outgoing chiefs as administrators may be issued around July 18.
