Bhopal, July 2: In response to the potential threat of below-average rainfall, the Madhya Pradesh government is ramping up its preparations. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that farmers in the state will confront weather challenges through scientific thinking and proper planning.
During a review meeting at the Secretariat on Thursday, Yadav assessed the readiness of various departments, including Farmer Welfare and Agricultural Development, Water Resources, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Cooperation, and Public Health Engineering. He emphasized that the anticipated dry spell should not be viewed as a challenge but rather as an opportunity for better planning, scientific farming, and timely preparations. All relevant departments are expected to work in coordination to provide farmers with timely guidance, ensuring that agricultural production and farmers’ incomes are not adversely affected.
Yadav highlighted that the priority is for every farmer in the state to face weather challenges with scientific thinking and adequate preparation. He noted that timely decisions and effective coordination among departments can significantly mitigate the impact of potential low rainfall.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to raise awareness among farmers about cultivating crops that require less water and can be prepared in a shorter time frame. He particularly encouraged the adoption of coarse grains and pulse crops such as sorghum, millet, urad, mung, tur, and kodo-kutki, which can yield better results with less water and prove more profitable for farmers.
He also urged farmers to avoid hasty sowing and to wait until sufficient moisture is present in the fields before planting. Moisture conservation measures should be implemented, and the use of high-yielding varieties and modern agricultural techniques should be maximized.
Yadav directed that the suggestions of agricultural scientists and subject matter experts be effectively communicated to farmers, enabling them to select suitable crops based on local conditions. The agricultural extension system should be made more active to support this initiative.
He assured that the state government is continuously monitoring the situation regarding potential low rainfall. All relevant departments should work in a coordinated manner according to the pre-planned action plan and provide farmers with all possible technical and administrative support.
