New Delhi, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : In a recent development regarding the Satya Niketan building collapse in New Delhi, a local court has ordered that three accused individuals be held in police custody for two days. The Patiala House Court made this ruling on September 9, following the arrest of Mahesh Gupta, the son of the building owner, along with contractor Sanoj and PG operator Sudhanshu.
The Delhi Police presented the trio in court after Mahesh Gupta’s initial two-day custody period had ended. During the hearing, the police requested an extension of custody for an additional three days. They informed the court that another suspect, Shubham Tyagi, remains at large. According to police reports, the building’s owner, Hariram Gupta, had leased a floor of the building to Tyagi.
The defense attorneys argued that there was a media trial occurring in this case. In response to this concern, the court instructed media representatives to leave the courtroom, allowing only the accused and their lawyers to remain.
Following the proceedings, the court confirmed the two-day police custody for all three accused. Earlier, a different court had ordered Mahesh Gupta to be held for two days, while Urmila and Hariram were placed in judicial custody for 14 days.
According to the Delhi Police, Mahesh Gupta stated during questioning that he was responsible for the building’s maintenance on behalf of his parents. The building had been leased to the PG operator “Hostel Days” in August 2025.
On Tuesday, police reported the arrest of a labor contractor from Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, who was overseeing repair work in the building’s basement. Initial inquiries revealed that on the day of the collapse, repairs were being conducted in the basement due to accumulated debris from recent rains. Additionally, renovations were underway on the ground floor to expand the commercial space.
The five-story building, operating as a boys’ PG, collapsed around 1:30 PM on Sunday, resulting in the tragic deaths of seven individuals.
