New Delhi, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Uttar Pradesh government has announced its intention to challenge the Allahabad High Court‘s ruling that canceled the detention of student activist Aakriti Chaudhary under the National Security Act (NSA). Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud’s bench that an appeal will be filed in the Supreme Court.
The Allahabad High Court had previously overturned Chaudhary’s NSA detention and ordered a compensation of ₹500,000. The court directed that this amount be recovered from the salaries of the officials responsible for her detention, including the District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Mehta Roopam, among others.
In its ruling, the High Court criticized the decision to impose the NSA on Chaudhary, stating that the grounds for her detention were based solely on conjecture and lacked sufficient evidence. The court described the administrative actions as “ridiculous” and instructed that the displeasure of the court be recorded in the service records of the concerned officials.
Chaudhary, who hails from Durgapur in West Bengal, graduated in history from Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College and is currently pursuing a law degree at the same institution. She has been active as a student leader since her college days. Her name surfaced during a protest in Noida, where over 40,000 workers took to the streets to voice their demands. Following this event, the NSA was invoked against her, a decision that has now been overturned by the Allahabad High Court.
